We publish what other people have already verified, and we tell you exactly where every claim came from. Reading the map

Three kinds of listing, never blended

The difference between them is the whole point. A directory that mixes verified facts with things people said about themselves is worse than no directory at all.

Certified

A third party inspected this farm. We name the program, the certifier and the date, and link you to the public record so you can check it yourself.

Grower-reported

The farm published a statement about how it grows. We quote it word for word and date it. Nobody has verified it — including us.

Listed only

We have confirmed the farm exists and where it is. It has not told us anything about its practices. Ask them.

Why we don’t say “no spray.” Because it is usually wrong. Certified organic growers do spray — copper, Bt, neem and other approved materials. It is an absolute claim almost nobody can honestly make, so instead of an adjective we invented, every listing shows what the farm actually said or what its certifier actually verified.

And a word about “regenerative.” Most regenerative programs measure soil health and grazing rather than chemical inputs, and several permit glyphosate at every certification tier. Where a farm calls itself regenerative without making an input claim, we say so plainly rather than let you assume something the label does not mean.

Charleston, honestly. There are only three certified-organic food farms in the entire tri-county. That is not a gap in our research — it is the shape of farming here. The Lowcountry runs on uncertified practice, which is exactly why what a grower tells you in their own words carries most of the weight on this map.

How we know all this. Certification status comes from the USDA Organic INTEGRITY Database and the certifying programs named on each listing. Everything else is reported by the farm or by a contributor, on the date shown. Fresh Start does not inspect farms, test soil or produce, or independently verify growing practices, and does not certify or endorse any farm. Practices change — confirm with the farm before you buy.
